Over "40" Regatta Cancelled Posted 6/23/2008
High water conditions on Pewaukee Lake continue to cause problems getting
sailing activities back on track. This, combined with a continuing order by
local law enforcement banning motorized traffic from the lake, have led to
the decision to cancel the Over 40 regatta for 2008. Pewaukee plans on
holding the event in 2009 and will be energetic in marketing the event to
increase attendance!

Registration
Free Regatta Registrations! Posted 3/3/2008
Young sailors will have free registrations in 2008 for all regattas sponsored by the NCSSA / ILYA C fleets. The NCSSA / ILYA is
picking up registration costs for all C scow NCSSA members that are under 25 years old at the time of the regatta. You must pre-register
(or pay the late fee) for the regatta. The NCSSA will cover the basic registration fee
-- extra food, wrist bands, T-shirts and drinks are
still at your own expense. Take advantage of this and get the word out to your fleets! Grab a young sailor and crew for them on your boat, lend your boat to a young sailor from your lake (only the skipper has to be under 25).
The goal is to help get young sailors to regattas and join the C fleet.

Champ of Champs Regatta
Augie and Jeff are representing the C's this week in Arkansas at the
Champion of Champions regatta. Here is the press release:
Little Rock, Ark. (October 25, 2006)
This week, 20 of the country's
top one-design sailors are meeting on the race course off Grande Maumelle
Sailing Club in Little Rock, Ark. to compete in US SAILING's U.S.
Championship of Champions. 20 different one-design National or North
American champions compete in the event. The one-design class champions are
competing in Y-Flyers for US SAILING's Jack Brown Trophy. Sponsored by Rolex
Watch U.S.A., Inc., racing begins on Thursday, Oct. 26 and finishes on
Saturday, Oct. 28. On Friday, October 27, competitors and local sailors will
have the unique opportunity to meet U.S. Olympic hopefuls Sally Barkow and
Carrie Howe in person at the US SAILING Mount Gay Rum Speaker Series. Barkow
and Howe, who along with Deb Capozzi are campaigning for a spot to go to
China in 2008 in the three-person Yngling class, have a remarkable record
sailing various one-design classes. Barkow, 2005 US SAILING Rolex
Yachtswoman of the Year, and Howe will talk about their sailing experiences,
such as winning the Yngling Women's World Championship and Women's World
Match Racing Championship in 2005, their recent trip to Qingdao in China
(site of the 2008 Olympic Regatta), and much more. The competition at the
U.S. Championship of Champions will be fierce, as these sailors are all
reigning champions in their respective classes. Among the competitors are
August "Augie" Barkow, C-Scow National Champion and Sally Barkow's brother,
13-year-old Flying Scot Jr. Champion Mac Cady, and Etchells World Champion
Bill Mauk.

2006 C Worlds Regatta: Great sailing, social, and
fleet meeting
Recalled by Matt Prange, Photos by Larry Kmiecik
Delavan Lake Yacht Club played host to the grand finale of the Centennial
C Scow season in superb fashion October 7th and 8th. Unseasonably warm
weather and arguably the best breeze seen this 2006 sailing season greeted
the eleventh annual C Worlds regatta. Roughly 20 true die-hards braved the
cool waters in what turned out to be an extremely competitive fleet. A
leisurely 10:30am start on day one allowed the competitors to sleep-in even
if traveling from home the morning of the regatta. A strong southwesterly
breeze caused many to sail with thirds right away in the first race that was
a W2+. Jim Gluek came on strong out of the blocks winning race one showing
everyone the same speed and smarts that the National Point runner-up showed
throughout the year. The hearty, fall meal of chili and steak sandwiches
refreshed the sailors for the endurance races that were to come. The first
race in the afternoon and the heavy breeze in the morning race prompted the
race committee to decide that the morning legs were just too short. Thus
they moved the top mark past the Yacht Club into the western finger of the
lake while leaving the bottom mark right in front of Lake Lawn Lodge. They
were the longest legs the C Scows had seen all year. Jim took race #2
sailing steady and fast. Race 3 saw shorter legs and it was 3 time C worlds
winner Joe Schaub taking the bullet. With 3 races in at the end of day one
it was Gluek in the lead with Team Wagon one point behind.
|
|
The Fall National meeting immediately followed the third race,
where extremely important information regarding the fleet was
discussed (but I can't really remember what) because of the FREE
BEER sailors' received with registration fees. |
The amazing fish boil preceded what turned out to be and eventful
evening. Hold 'Em and Flip-Cup (or boat racing to cool people) were the
names of the games at the party. Flip-Cup is now the staple of C Scow
social activities and this evening was no different the highlight of
which had to be "Barkows v. not-Barkows" with A-25 and V-11, distant
relatives, teaming up to take on an elite team of challengers. The
outcome was not pretty (let's just say it was a good night to be "not-Barkow").
| Two marathon length races in the beautiful October sun set the
stage for an exciting day 2. Race 4 was led most of the race by D-21
Ed Clair, sailing very strong on the long legs and big winds, but
only to be squeezed out at the end by V-11, M-20 and V-137. Race 5
brought the regatta down to the wire; V-11 had a 1 pt lead over
V-137. M-17 and V-11 jumped out to a lead on the fleet, with 137
struggling off the start. But with amazing boat speed, 137 was right
back to the top group by the leeward mark. |
|
The Dog fight begun and the tacking duel on the last leg of the modified
2 was a exciting finish to a great regatta. M-17 took the win, V-11 2nd
and then V-137. The back-to-back heavy air races on Sunday proved to be
a good combination for Team Wagon with a 1st and 2nd on day two to once
again prove the prowess they had showed all year as they took the Worlds
crown. And Delavan once again showed their prowess in hosting one of the
most fun, cost effective (cheapest), well-run regattas of the year. Just
think, only 363 days until we get to go back again! See you at
midwinter's.
